Member-only story
I used Word all the time until last year my supervisor suggested me to try Latex. I am not good at formatting and often use Word templates. If I can’t find templates, I will transform the PDF file our school provide into a Word file, and then edit it. I am happy with Latex, although it’s a bit tricky to get used to it. Here are three topics I want to share.
- Why Latex
- How to use it
- Useful tools
1. Why Latex
Latex is a tool to create professional-looking documents. It uses Mark Up language to handle the typesetting of the file. SO it could separate format and content, allowing us to change the style easily, like clicking to switch from bright mode to dark mode.
As mentioned above, I hate formatting; Latex solves this problem for me because there are tons of templates I can use on the Latex website(styles are designed for us). You can find many official university templates. In Latex, complicated parts of typesetting are easy to deal with, like creating equations, tables of contents, referencing and having a consistent layout across all sections(it would be a nightmare to examine the style consistency if your report is above 50 pages). Therefore, we can focus on writing rather than formatting.
