The Almost Drop-Out Diary: Week 1

I made no progress from last week. I got the keys to my new apartment and am scheduled to move next Wednesday, but I made zero progress in my studies.

I attended the regular monthly meeting of our traffic team, where one classmate presented her progress. Her progress review is also scheduled for next month, but she has accomplished everything: she published a paper in a top journal, completed all the writing (40,000 words) for her third progress review, and started working as a consultant at the Traffic and Main Road Department in the government last month.

And me? I have no satisfactory work to present at the upcoming progress review. I know comparison is harmful, but it’s difficult not to compare. It feels useless and negative, yet you can’t help it. I wish I could be as confident as her.

After a moody day, I finally managed to drag myself out of bed, had lunch, did some housework, and had a milk tea. Now, I’m writing this journal. I will start working on the project after writing.

I told myself it had nothing to do with the degree. Think of yourself as a data scientist dealing with an interesting dataset. Remember why you chose to work on this kind of project in the first place. Think of yourself as a detective of data, playing some detective game.
